According to a newly compiled list of best-selling games in Japan for the year 2020, Animal Crossing has clearly dominated the market. There are 5 million units which are sold till now, making it to the top of the list of best-selling games in Japan.
Famitsu has released a data of physical sale figures of the units in the first half of 2020, which shows this game has made 5 times more unit sale than the second entrant: “Final Fantasy 7 Remake”, which has sold 0.93 million. It’s worth noting that these figures are excluding the digital sale of the games, hence the actual sale figures can be much higher.
The game was launched in March’2020, and in just 2 months after the launch of Animal Crossing, the game has performed exceptionally well amongst the players and it already surpassed its lifetime sales expectations. it is also the biggest switch launch ever in Japan.
The surge in the gaming industry is also considered due to Covid-19 outbreak, as the whole world is under lockdown since March’2020. And this game has been launched right around the corner of the same timeline. It surely has affected the production of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch bundle, still the outbreak seems to be in big favour of making this game a quick success.
Famitsu has also released the sales stats for the consoles in Japan:
-With the switch in the first 2.6 million units. (Consol’s lifetime sale: 14 million units)
-Playstation 4 has sold 0.43 million units. (Lifetime sale: 9.2 million units)
-Xbox One has sold just 2,685 units. (Lifetime sale: 0.1 million units)
-Nintendo 3DS has sold 33,000 units. (Lifetime sale: 24.5 million)
– Including all the console variants such as Switch Lite and the PS4 Pro.
Famitsu also announced: In 1st half of 2020, the consumers have spent ¥95.47 billion on software and ¥79.3 billion on hardware, which equates to a woofing figure of ¥174.8 billion spent on games retail.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate (Switch & Nintendo) – approx 0.284 million units sold.
Minecraft (Switch & Microsoft) – approx 0.28 million units sold.
Resident Evil 3 Remake (PS4 & Capcom) – approx 0.263 million units sold.
Pokémon Mysterious Dungeon Rescue Team DX (Switch / The Pokémon Company) – approx 0.26 million units sold.
Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon (PS4 & Sega) – approx 0.259 million units sold.
