SEGA plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sonic The Hedgehog with new games and announcements.
In 2021 it will be 30 years since a certain blue hedgehog first stepped on consoles. Sonic The Hedgehog, SEGA’s icon par excellence, will be celebrating its anniversary. And it seems that we will celebrate it with new games and events of all kinds.
The information comes to us in an unusual way: in a catalog with advertising for advertisers, Licensing Source Book, published on July 21 this summer. It has been the Tails Channel that has discovered that, in a double-page dedicated to Sonic, they mention the 30th-anniversary celebrations (page 90-91).
“A Year of Celebration: New Games, Digital Content, Events, Important Announcements, and a Bespoke Licensing Program.”

On this page, it is also reported that the franchisee has obtained more than 6,000 million dollars in profits, with more than 920 million games sold. Additionally, the recent film, released in February 2020 (just before theaters closed) earned more than $ 300 million worldwide.
The film’s sequel is already underway at Paramount Pictures, with its release expected on April 8, 2022.
Failing to see SEGA plans, it seems to want to make a similar move to that of Nintendo, which celebrates the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros . with new games for Nintendo Switch, like that Super Mario 3D All-Stars that is giving so much to talk about.
In 2011, SEGA already celebrated the 20th anniversary of Sonic with Sonic Generations, a game that brought together modern Sonic with classic Sonic in 2D and 3D levels.
It’s been two years since the last Sonic game, Sonic Forces, was released. However, that year 2017 the most beloved Sonic Mania was also launched, which emulated the classics of MegaDrive. Will the situation be repeated in 2021, with new classic and modern style Sonic games?
