The Last Of Us Part 2: Best Video Game Sales In US Since 2009

The Last of Us Part 2 is the best-selling game of June including the third-best-selling game of the year in America.

June 2020 was another excellent month in terms of console and video game sales in the United States, spurred on from the previous month thanks to the release of The Last of Us Part 2.  According to data from the NPD Group, spending on consoles, video games and accessories in June was 26% higher than in June last year and the highest since June 2009.

In total, the income obtained by the sector amounts to 1,200 million dollars. The accumulated income in these first six months of the year is 6,600 million, 19% more than last year, and the highest since 2010.

This upward trend has been maintained since March, coinciding with the start of confinement by the coronavirus.

As assumed, The Last of Us Part 2 was the best-selling game of the month. Sales of the PS4 game, which came out on June 19, are enough to rank it as the third-best-selling game so far this year in the US. It’s also the second-best month for a Sony game release ever, behind only Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 (although that game was released earlier in the month, so it had more days of “edge.”

The rest of the top 10 is made up of “usual suspects” such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Mortal Kombat 11 or GTA V. The surprise is Ring Fit Adventure, which is ranked 7th of the best sellers in June when in May it was in the number position 835 !. The reason is the stock recovery of the demanded fitness game from Nintendo Switch. 

Switch, by the way, was again the best-selling console of the month, both in units and in income obtained. However, despite the general increase, hardware sales revenues were 17% lower than those of June last year (this is not the case for the year accumulated).
